ISO 1234 - Split pins
Split pins, also called cotter pins: a half-round wire folded into a round eye, whose two legs lie flat face to flat face and together form a round shank. One leg is longer than the other by a, and the shape of the leg ends is optional. The nominal size is the diameter of the split pin hole, for which tolerance class H13 is recommended up to size 1,2 and H14 above; the pin itself is slightly thinner, for example 4,4 to 4,6 mm for size 5. Each size corresponds to a range of bolt and clevis pin diameters; for railway applications and for split pins in clevis pins under alternating transverse forces the next larger size is recommended. Steel, copper-zinc alloy, copper, aluminium alloy and austenitic stainless steel pins share one dimension table. Covers nominal sizes from 0,6 to 20 mm with lengths from 4 to 280 mm.
